“Dwell on the beauty of life. Watch the stars, and see yourself running with them.”
Stoicism, often misconstrued in modern culture as a philosophy advocating emotional suppression, actually promotes a more balanced approach to managing emotions. The Stoics acknowledged that human impulses, including the desire to create music, were natural and originated from the body's inherent drive to inspire actions that contributed to the survival and well-being of the species. Instead of suppressing all emotions, Stoics focused on mitigating "passions," derived from the Greek word "pathê," which referred to experiences one undergoes.
Passions were considered "excessive and irrational" impulses, and it was these emotions that the Stoics aimed to suppress. This approach can be applied to the human desire to create music, as the Stoics would appreciate the natural inclination to express emotions and experiences through the art form. Music can serve as a healthy medium for individuals to explore their emotions, communicate profound thoughts, and foster a sense of interconnectedness with others. In this context, Stoicism's principles align with the pursuit of music as a means to attain emotional balance, self-awareness, and personal growth, rather than endorsing the suppression of creative expression.
This is my 'why.' It may or may not resonate with you, but I hope that by sharing it, we can find common ground and foster a sense of understanding. As human beings, we all have our unique reasons for the choices we make, the paths we follow, and the passions we pursue. In this interconnected world, it's vital that we embrace our individual 'whys' and recognize the power they have to bring us together.
My 'why' stems from a deep-seated belief in the power of connection and the importance of forging meaningful relationships. I am driven by the desire to create spaces where people can express themselves, learn from one another, and grow together. Through our shared experiences, we can cultivate empathy, foster collaboration, and expand our collective understanding.
When we gather to create, explore, and appreciate art, such as music, we transcend boundaries and unite people from different walks of life. Music has the remarkable ability to evoke emotions, tell stories, and convey universal themes that resonate across cultures, languages, and beliefs. By embracing our individual 'whys' and supporting each other in our creative endeavors, we strengthen the bonds that make us human.
As we come together in the spirit of collaboration, let us celebrate the diversity of our passions and aspirations. Each one of us carries a unique 'why' within our hearts, and it is through sharing these personal motivations that we can truly connect with one another on a deeper level. By acknowledging and embracing our differences, we can forge a stronger, more compassionate, and more understanding world—one where we lift each other up and support each other in the pursuit of our dreams.
So, this is my 'why,' and I invite you to share yours. Let us build bridges of connection and understanding, and create a community that celebrates our shared humanity and our diverse passions
